Walt Disney World with Kids: What to Know Before You Go
Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, planned the way a friend who's done it a dozen times would tell you.
When to Go
Time it right and Disney World gets dramatically calmer.
- 🌞 Quietest stretch: Mid-September, the week after Labor Day through late September, is the calmest of the year.
- 📅 Other calm weeks: Late January into early February, early May, the first two weeks of December, and early November (between Jersey Week and Thanksgiving).
- 🚫 Busiest weeks: New Year's Eve week, the two weeks around Easter and spring break, July 4th week, and Thanksgiving week.
- ⏰ Early entry: Disney Resort hotel guests get about 30 minutes of early entry at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios; Animal Kingdom opens even earlier for cooler safari hours.
- 💡 Pro tip: Skip rope drop at Animal Kingdom and arrive around 2pm instead, finishing in the evening once the morning safari crowd thins.
- ⛈️ Storms: Near-daily summer afternoon thunderstorms; save indoor shows for the storm window, do outdoor rides in the morning or evening.
What You Can Bring In
Pack smart and security moves fast.
- 🎒 Bag size: Suitcases, bags, coolers, and backpacks over 24in long by 15in wide by 18in high aren't allowed in any theme park.
- 🧊 Ice & coolers: Loose ice is increasingly turned away, so bring a soft-sided cooler with sealed ice packs, and skip glass except small baby-food jars.
- 🚫 Strollers: Max 31in wide and 52in long; stroller wagons or any wagons aren't allowed.
- 👕 Dress code: Shoes and shirts required at all times; clothing that drags on the ground isn't allowed.
- 🎈 Animal Kingdom only: Balloons and plastic straws are banned, extra caution for the live-animal collection.
- 🔍 Security: Bags, parcels, and clothing may be screened; a triggered detector means a full manual bag check.

Getting Around and Skipping Lines
Getting around all four parks (and skipping lines) runs through one app.
- 🚝 Free transport: Buses, monorail, Skyliner gondolas, and boats/ferries are free for every guest, resort or day visitor.
- 🗺️ Monorail: Links Magic Kingdom, the Transportation and Ticket Center, EPCOT, and the 3 monorail resorts.
- 🚌 Skyliner & buses: Skyliner connects EPCOT and Hollywood Studios to several resorts; buses reach every hotel and all 4 parks.
- 🅿️ Parking: About $35 a day covers all four parks same-day; free for Disney Resort hotel guests and eligible Annual Passholders (as of 2026, confirm before you go).
- 📱 App: My Disney Experience handles mobile tickets, live wait times, Genie's touring plan, dining reservations, and Mobile Order at nearly every counter-service spot.
- ⚡ Lightning Lane: Multi Pass holds up to 3 ride reservations at once and refills as you use them; Single Pass covers top headliners one ride at a time.
- 💡 Pro tip: Both are booked only in the app, and pricing shifts by park and date, so check the day's number there.
With Little Kids
Small-kid logistics, mapped out.
- 🔁 Rider switch: Ask the cast member at the entrance; one parent rides while the other waits with your child, then swap without a second full wait (a third party member can often ride again too).
- 🚼 Baby Care (MK/EPCOT): Magic Kingdom between Crystal Palace and Casey's Corner; EPCOT inside "the Odyssey" building toward World Showcase.
